HFCA Starts a New Partnership with the Global Development Group.... And Makes it Easier for People from the US to Make Donations!
18/12/12
Hello! My name is Shanti and I am the new HFCA US representative. I am really excited to join the HFCA team and help support young Cambodians through soccer.
I’m also excited to announce that HFCA has developed a new partnership with the international non-profit organization, Global Development Group. With projects in 35 countries worldwide, GDG is an excellent organization working to relieve poverty through quality aid and development projects. As part of the partnership, HFCA will now be able to provide donors from the US with a tax-deductible donation experience with support from the 501(c)(3) status GDG office in the USA. All of our supporters in the US will soon be able to donate safely and securely.
With this new partnership and the continued success of HFCA, I hope that people in the US will get behind this project and support our programs. I had the pleasure of getting to meet this year’s Cambodia Homeless World Cup team in Mexico City and see firsthand that the opportunities made possible by HFCA are positively changing lives.

Ex Homeless World Cup players giving back to HFCA
20/11/12

On my recent visit to Cambodia before going to the the Homeless World Cup in Mexico I had the pleasure of catching up with 7 of our coaching staff (pictured with Jimmy Campbell and Vibol Chao) and it was great to see the personal growth and development of these young men. Sam Yi and Rithy Chan took part in the 2009 Homeless World Cup in Milan and and have been coaches at HFCA ever since. Sam Yi used to be quiet as a mouse but now after two years as a professional player with a Cambodia Premier League club he has blossomed into a respectful and strong young man who barks orders at training sessions and commands respect from the HFCA youth. Rithy Chan was the smallest player in Milan but his passion for the game is evident for all to see and he is a very poplar member of staff. His moustache is a sight to be behold
Our three newest staff Hem Sreng, Chandoeurn Nhel and Rin Roeun all played in the 2011 Homeless World Cup in Paris and whilst they are still shy we believe they have the potential to be leaders in their community and be good role models for the other boys and girls in our program. At present we have seven ex Homeless World Cup staff in our program and our aim to take that number up to sixteen by the end of 2013.
In the past we have hired external coaches but our policy now is to invest in youth and promote from within. We pay each coach 10,000 Riel ($2.50) per session. In a country where the average wage is $1 a day its good pay for two hour work. Once we get our coaching staff up to 16 ex Homeless World Cup staff it will cost us $40 a coaching session. Considering we hold 48 sessions a year the total cost for 16 coaches for the year is $1920.

The smallest player with the biggest heart
20/11/12
With the warm after glow of the Mexican Homeless World Cup slowing fading and preparations for 2013 Homeless World Cup in Poland already happening I would like to share one last Mexican related story with you. Cambodia V Norway. The ball in there to be won and up steps Chan Sophondara to take on two Norwegian giants both of whom are at least 6 foot. All three go for the ball at the same time and Chan Sophondara comes out the worst and flies through the air. Bounces up straight away, no complaints or rolling around the ground. He wants to win the ball back.
Of the 500 plus players in the tournament Ton was the smallest player but with the biggest heart. His personal story is one of battling against the odds on and off the pitch but with a heart like a lion he never gives up

King Norodom Sihanouk died on October 15 (1922-2012)
25/10/12
Please Take a moment to remember Cambodia's former King, Norodom Sihanouk who has reigned since 1941. His death has fallen on the Annual Festival for the Dead. May he rest in peace. King Norodom Sihanouk died on October 15, 2012 at the age of 89 in Beijing, China of natural causes.
Norodom Sihanouk was the undisputed father of his country to most Cambodians. The Cambodian royal chronicles, dating from the middle of the fourteenth century, continued a tale of strife in which periods of triumph and conquest alternated with eras of defeat and vassalage. Although the connection between the Khmer kings of the chronicles and the ancient Khmer dynasties celebrated in legend has never been established, the people regarded Prince Norodom Sihanouk as the direct descendant of an ancient lineage in whose accomplishments they took great pride.

Team Cambodia do everyone proud in Mexico City
25/10/12

Team Cambodia took part in the Homeless World Cup for the fifth year in a row and we now feel like part of the Homeless World Cup family as we met up with many familiar faces from the competing countries. Our Mexican hosts did a fantastic job and the accommodation and local guides were superb. The Cambodian team gave their all and Coach Jimmy did a great job ensuring they were so fit and fighting for every ball. With the smallest and youngest team in the event as well as only having five players instead of eight like the other countries taking part to finish 32nd overall is a great achievement. Vibol did a great job ensuring the players were so well behaved and great ambassadors for Cambodia. Thanks to all our sponsors and supporter for helping us get there.
You can see all our pics here (thanks to Fiona Crawford)

You can check out all the highlights right here on the HFCA website and see the World Rankings as they now stand here. Thanks to a great effort, Cambodia now sits above USA, France, Spain, Canada, Germany, Greece, Sweden among others....
Well done to the lads, to Vibol, Jimmy and Paraic, to the hosts in Mexico and to everyone at the Homeless World Cup organisation.

Team Cambodia depart for Mexico City
27/09/12
As you read this Team Cambodia are on their way to the 10th Homeless World Cup in Mexico City. We departed from Cambodia last night and Its going to take us 30 hours to get from Phnom Penh to Mexico City via Paris but in real terms that's the easy bit. Our journey to Mexico City started in February when we started our fundraising campaign as qualification for the Homeless World Cup is done off the pitch, not on it.

Its taken a massive effort to get the team to Mexico City and unfortunately not all the players can make it as we fell short in our fundraising efforts and had to leave two of the squad behind. I delivered the bad news in person on Sunday and both players who missed out were understandably very upset as were their team mates who are going and all the staff. We all feel for them but I told them that if they continue to come to training every week we will take them to the 2013 Homeless World Cup in Poland.
There are so many organisations and individuals that we have to thank that it would be impossible to list them all in this newsletter but particular thanks must go our main sponsors Flight Centre, Smart Mobile, GFSS Incorporated as well as our other sponsors Paddy Rice Irish Sports Bar, Banzai Events, Collingwood Rotary, KPMG Cambodia, The Old Ivanarians, Rita Dipietro and everyone who donated through our website or via Team Coach Jimmy Campbell.
Ivanhoe Grammar school (Melbourne) visit HFCA
27/09/12

Ivanhoe Grammar school have been a vital supporter of HFCA's work in Cambodia and we have played them in many matches over the years and their students are always well behaved and respectful towards our players. We are honoured that our relationship has grown from it first beginnings at the Homeless World Cup in Melbourne in 2008 to now become an annual and sometimes bi annual event. Ivanhoe Grammar has been one of our biggest donors over the years and for that we will always be grateful.

In June of this year they came again to visit and Ivanhoe Grammar staff member Chris Norwood said the following
"Ivanhoe grammar School runs a service project to Cambodia each year in June and one of the highlights is to meet up with the Happy Football Cambodia players. This year we had 16 students, 8 boys and 8 girls and we participated in a series of 10 minute rotations. Straight off the plane from the day before and having stumbled out of bed at 6.00am, Ivanhoe were characteristically trounced but the games were played with good spirit and humour"

The annual Charity Cup took place in May and was a great success. We raised over $US3,000 for the HFCA project.
Moving to its new home at the amazing Beeline Stadium this was the third year the Charity Cup was held.
10 teams took part and all of them enjoyed the competitive spirit of the competition but also raising money for football players less fortunate than themselves.
Thanks to everyone who took part and all our sponsors and special thanks to Eric Delacollettee for allowing HFCA to use the amazing Beeline Venue and HFCA head of coaching Jimmy Campbell who is the driving force behind this competition.

Everyone at Manchester United are proud of you!!
2/5/12
In our February newsletter we reported that HFCA player Sam Yi who took part in the 2008 Homeless World Cup in Melbourne had turned professional with a team in the Cambodian Premier League. Well, for us this is huge news but what makes it even better is that you guys out there have recognised just how great this is and let us know how happy you are about it!
The praise that we have received has included an email directly from Louis Garvey, Community Football Coach at Manchester United Football Club. Louis met the Cambodian team at the 2010 Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro and took them for a personal training session!
"No doubt this is down to his natural ability and hard work, but in no small way the time and effort put into all of your players is a credit to you all. Please pass on my congratulations to Sam Yi and all of the other players. Everyone at Manchester United are proud of you" said Louis
Andy Hook who is Director of Football at the Homeless World Cup also said "These are the stories I love to hear, of how the guys have benefitted from getting involved in football and it is testament to the great work you are doing with the guys so give you and your staff a big pat on the back from me"
Mexico City Homeless World Cup 2012
2/5/12
With five months and counting till the 10th Homeless World Cup HFCA's preparations for Mexico City are full steam ahead. We have started extra training on Sunday afternoons and will select the team at the end of May. Then the real hard work begins as we try to get passports and Mexican visas for the players and most importantly funds for the return flights.
"In a developing country such as Cambodia and in the especially dire area where CCF works, there are few opportunities to truly aspire and even fewer examples of those who have transcended their environment. The Homeless World Cup provides the youth here with hope and a tangible goal. Despite the desperation and struggles faced by these youths, there are living examples of those who have transcended their situation." Scott Neeson, Executive Director, Cambodian Children's Fund. On Saturday the 18th of Feb HFCA had a special visitor from Global Giving, an organisation based in Washington DC. Representing Global Giving was Jacqueline Lee. Jacqueline also has a blog and did a great write up on her visit. Click here to read about her visit to HFCA. We were grateful to have her come to our program and she enjoyed it, saying "Vibol, Chandara, Jimmy and the rest of the staff were absolutely incredible. I can't think of a better way to start my day than being a part of a morning team-building and confidence building youth-program. I just wanted to commend you on the amazing work that you're doing. The impact in the community and in the lives of these kids is evident."

HFCA Turns Six!!
29/11/11
HFCA was formed six years ago in November 2005. Its been a rollercoaster of a ride and several times it looked like we would have to close down but through the hard work of our staff in Cambodia and volunteers in Australia and around the world we have reached the milestone of six years!!
In that time we have formed five official partnerships with other charities in Cambodia, been to four Homeless World Cups in Melbourne (2008), Milan (2009), Rio De Janerio (2010), Paris (2011) and hosted the world famous Inter Milan in November 2008. As part of our birthday celebrations we are launching the "Back in the day" series to celebrate our achievements and hope there is many more to come.
Thanks to everyone who helped us on our journey so far.

Jimmy coaches in Cambodian Premier League
5/10/11

.jpg)
HFCA head of coaching Jimmy Campbell came to the rescue of struggling Cambodian Premier League team Chhlam Sakmut FC when he took over the managers role in early July. In the ten team league Chhlam Sakmut FC were taking part at this level for the first time. Jimmy's record whilst coach was played nine, with three wins and six defeats, finishing 8th. When interviewed he said the following "All in all it was a good experience, it was interesting for me to see how Cambodian players at this standard differ from other professional players in the world. Some dont take it very seriously and some for whatever reason do not commit themselves fully. But some other players were great to work with and I found quite a few who would listen and were willing to learn and to improve."
Everyone at HFCA is proud of Jimmy's efforts to keep the Chhlam Sakmut team in the Cambodian premier league.
Cambodian Team wins the hearts and minds of Homeless World Cup fans
01/10/11

Team Cambodia took part in the 9th Homeless World Cup in Paris. The players had an amazing time in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The team gave their all on the pitch, winning three games against Sweden, Canada and Japan. At times we struggled against some of the European and South American teams whose superior skills and greater physical size made it difficult to compete but the players gave their all in every game and you cant ask for more than that.
Off the pitch the fans loved the team because they tried so hard, despite being the youngest group there and having the smallest player in the event, the only and only Sreng Hem. Sreng ended up being our best player. In the first few games he was starting on the bench but the end of the tournament he was the first name on coaches Jimmy Campbell's team sheet.
Cambodia finished 45th out of 48 teams. Thanks to all our sponsors in particular the Homeless World Cup, Smart Mobile, Banzai Cambodia, Collingwood Rotary Club, Paddy Rice Irish Sports Bar and all our staff, volunteers and supporters.

The 2012 Homeless World Cup is in Mexico City and we look forward to giving another 8 young men an opportunity for a life changing experience with your continued support. Viva la Football!
Cambodian Team meet Cambodian Ambassador to France
01/10/11
After another hard day on the football pitches of the Homeless World Cup we were heading to the Eiffel Tower and our guide Aiden suggested we try to find the Cambodian embassy as he thought it was close to the Homeless World Cup venue. We found a building close to the Eiffel Tower with a Cambodian flag hanging outside and an older gentleman reading the newspaper. We asked if it was the Cambodian embassy and if so could we meet the ambassador. He informed us that he was the Ambassador and this was his private home, not the Embassy! Fortunately Ambassador Uch Kiman had a sense of humour and very kindly invited us into his house which was very impressive by the way and 200 metres from the Eiffel Tower. The Ambassador provided us with drinks and snacks and introduced us to some family members. The players were very happy to meet the Ambassador and his warm welcome was one of the highlights of our time in Paris.
Thank you Ambassador Uch Kiman !
Cambodian Homeless Team Treated To A Feast At The King's Favourite Restaurant In Paris
01/10/11
There are many Cambodians in France due to the close relationship between the two countries but finding them in a city of 8 million people is not easy so it was only on the last day that we had any Cambodian supporters and we struck gold as we met two of the nicest men, Cambodian or otherwise, that I had the pleasure of meeting...anytime...anywhere, any country, time or place: Restauranteur Veng and businessman Boun Long have lived in Paris since the 1970's and they treated the players and staff like long lost family. Veng generously treated the Cambodian Team to a beautiful meal his very own La Moussoun restaurant which is a mere 5 or 6 blocks from the Eiffel Tower. In between courses of great Khmer food we listened to Boun's tales of life as a Cambodian in France and was impressed with how humble he and Veng were despite the fact that both of them had done very well in their adopted home of France.
Boun and Veng - Thank you very much for your generousity and we hope to see you one day again in Paris.
Cambodia team leave for Paris
19/08/11
As I am typing this, the Cambodian Team is on their way to Paris for the 9th Homeless World Cup. Eight players are boarding a plane for the first time, on their first trip outside Cambodia and we believe they will wear the Cambodian jersey with pride and show the world what Cambodian footballers can achieve. We may not win the event but we are confident we can cause some shocks
Thanks to everyone who helped us reach the Homeless World Cup for the fourth consecutive year. We are particularly grateful to the Homeless World Cup, Smart Mobile, Paddy Rice Irish Sports Bar, Banzai Cambodia and Collingwood Rotary Club for their financial support. Thanks to all our Cambodian partners for the great work they do with all the players that attend our program. Cambodian Children's Fund, The Happy School, Centre for Children's Happiness, Riverkids Project and Cambodian Kids Foundation are amazing organisations and we are proud to be associated with them.
Finally thanks to all our staff in Cambodia and volunteers in Australia and around the world for your great efforts. Jimmy Campbell and Vibol Chao have done some great work with the lads over the last six months preparing them for Paris and HFCA are very fortunate to have them as part of our staff.

They played 14 games, winning 3 games, drawing 4 games and losing 7 games. They finished 7th in the ladder. The total cost of taking part in this competition was $US1350. Well done to all the players.
Impact of the Homeless World Cup (part 3)
19/08/11
In part 3 of our series about the impact of the Homeless World Cup we asked our partner Centre for Children's Happiness who have had players registered with HFCA go to the Homeless World Cups in Melbourne (2008), Milan (2009) and Rio (2010) how being part of the Homeless World Cup impacted on their students.
Centre for Children's Happiness Founder Mr Mech Sokha said the following about HFCA and the Homeless World Cup program "HFCA has given opportunity to the children to learn about self leaderships, skills and good attitude, to give them the opportunity to see the different people in the world in order to encourage and motivate them to learn to live together with sharing ideally, financially and spiritually. After attending and come back from Homeless World Cup, the five children are trying hard to learn more, to live independently, to share their ideas what they learnt the culture from the HWC."

"My sister Ali and I decided that it was high time for a good wardrobe clean out! After discussing with friends, we discovered we weren't the only ones in this situation, so came to the conclusion that a good old fashioned clothes swap was in order.A very simple task of gathering all your friends getting together with their unwanted clothes and swapping. Beats shopping!
Since Ali and I are both big supporters of HFCA and another charity Inti Wara Yassi, we thought we'd add a twist to the day, instead of a straight swap of clothing, we asked our guests to make a donation for each item they took. The donation was anything from $1-$5 depending on how good the item was. We had 20 people at the swap in total, shared clothes, food, drinks and stories, making for a great Sunday afternoon. Not only that, but we raised $300, $150 for HFCA and $150 for Inti Wara Yassi!
That $150 will now cover the cost of the pitch rental for 10 weeks of the program!
Such a huge difference in the lives of these young people for such little effort from us. Looks like we'll now be making this an annual event!

Thank you Paddy Rice!

Local band 'Holiday in Cambodia' kick started the evening with some great music which had the boys in the Homeless World Cup team grooving along on Sisowath Quay while they waited to be introduced to the crowd at Paddy Rice Hotel and Sports Bar.
Happy Football Cambodia Australia is enormously grateful to Chris Hayward and Darren Marshall for providing the venue and contributing to the Auction items.
Spurred on by Auctioneer Anthony Galloway, the energetic bidding for golfing weekends, hotel and restaurant packages and Phnom Penh events resulted in $2500 being raised to assist the HWC team travel to Paris in August 2011. “The Homeless World Cup is a great event for vulnerable teenagers because it helps with their recovery. It gives them hope - something to aim for. It also provides a link to education, which is vital to stopping the circle of poverty,” said Mr Sophon, the Country Director of Riverkids, “It helps them to strive for a better future - for themselves, their families and their friends.”

Canadian International School visit HFCA again
1/05/11
On Saturday the 23rd of April we had another visit from Singapore CIS's (Canadian International School) and we were delighted to have them back after their first visit in 2010.
Before the action started we had a 15 minutes performance of traditional Khmer dancing to welcome the CIS students to HFCA. The dancers came from HFCA partner the Happy School and it was fantastic to see them perform their first ever gig outside of the Happy School. Everyone was enthralled by their fantastic performance. We then had two games and HFCA boys and girls teams were victorious against stronger than expected CIS teams.
"The friendlies between HFCA and CIS, were just that, friendly. We greatly appreciated the warm welcome we received and thanks to the cultural presentations, we felt like honoured guests. Thanks for a memorable experience." CIS's Scott Little

Make The Difference short film
24/03/11

TMB (Thai Military Bank) have launched a new brand vision "Make THE Difference" by making a film to inspire people to start thinking differently. With a hope that they will start to Make THE Difference to their own world. It doesn't have to be big, but a little can create positive changes. This film is based on a true story. In 1986 a football team that lived on a little island in the south of Thailand called "Koh Panyee". It's a floating village in the middle of the sea that has not an inch of soil. The kids here loved to watch football but had nowhere to play or practice. But they didn't let that stop them. They challenged the norm and have become a great inspiration for new generations on the island. Check it out

Team Cambodia took part in their third Homeless World Cup in Rio, Brazil.
20/10/10

It was a great adventure, especially for the six young men who represented their country on a world stage. We finished 39th overall which was an improvement on our position in Milan 2009 (45th) and Melbourne 2008 (46th). At times we struggled on the pitch against teams who come from strong footballing nations but the players gave their all and had two notable victories over Canada.
Off the pitch the players were great ambassadors for Cambodia. All the opposite teams and fans took them to their hearts and wanted theit pictures taken with them. Quite a hit with the ladies!
If you would like to see pictures from the event click here.
So many people to thank for making this happen. Our staff Jimmy Campbell and Vibol Chao. All our staff and volunteers in Cambodia who work so hard to make our program work. Thanks to Bernhard, Mel, Debs, Andy and Robin from the Homeless World Cup for getting us through the red tape of visas and their financial support. Our sponsors KPMG and Champion System. John Grogan, Shane Kingston, Mech Sokha and Jon Hammond for all their hard work behind the scenes. Massive thank you to the Canadian and Polish teams for their passionate support during our games in Rio.

New Partnerships
29/04/10
HFCA has formed two new partnership with Australia organisations which we believe will help to secure the long term financial future of HFCA. We all love feel good stories about disadvantaged youth getting a good education and playing sport so that one day they can have a better life but behind the scenes at any organisation there is the tedious work of creating the platform to allow organisations like HFCA to give them these opportunities. Our new partnerships with Global Development Group and Eway will allow our supporters in Australia to make tax free deductions and our international supporters to donate via the internet and have the utmost confidence in the security of these transactions.
Global Development Group
HFCA is proud to be a partner of Global Development Group (ABN 57 102 400 993), an Australian Non Government Organisation [NGO] carrying out humanitarian projects with approved partners and providing aid to relieve poverty and provide long term solutions through the provision of quality aid and development projects. GDG takes responsibility of the project according to AusAID rules, providing a governance role and assisting in the areas of planning, monitoring, evaluating and auditing to ensure that the projects are carried out to Australian requirements. Tax deductible receipts for donations to this approved aid and development project will be issued by GDG for Project J634N Happy Football Cambodia. For more information about GDG, visit http://www.globaldevelopment.org.au

HFCA compete in league football!
15/02/10
For the first time HFCA have entered two teams in a U14 league. The league run by the FFC (Football Federation Cambodia) and ISF (Indochina Starfish Foundation) gives 24 of our players the oppurtunity to play in a proper football competition for the first time in their lives. The 24 players come from our partners, The Happy School, Riverkids and Center for Childrens Happiness. Every Saturday these players get to take part in championships that give them the opportunity to showcase their talents, to forget about the variety of issues they face in their daily lives, to do the sort of activity that children in the developed world take for granted. The total cost of this 10 week program is $US1200. It does not sound like a lot of money but it has stretched our limited resources to the limit. Without the support of our team sponsors ANZ Royal Bank and your continued support it would be impossible for HFCA to offer opportunities like this.

07/08/09
"With just four weeks to go to the Homeless World Cup Milan, Team Cambodia are happy to anounce an anonymous supporter has loaned $15,000 to get the team to Milan. HFCA have two years to pay back this loan. Without this donors generousity we would not be able to get to Milan. This money will cover return flights from Phnom Penh to Milan but we still need money for travel insurance, Italian visas, airport taxes and to also ensure the players have money for food/clothes and a little to enjoy their stay in Milan.
We want the best possible opportunity for these young men who have worked so hard to be a part of this once in a life time opportunity. For this to happen, we ask you to make a donation of $10-$20 or more to help these young street soccer players kick their goal. Every dollar counts towards making their dreams come true.
